The excavation was carried out under the charge of John Marshall, then director general of archaeology in India. The first 2 volumes are the text of the excavations and the 3 volumes consist only of plates, diagrams, maps and plans. The first volume has 19 chapters and 14 plates, the chapters describe the country, climate, rivers, the excavations, the buildings, antiquities, art, religion, disposal of the dead, the extent of the Indus civilization, the age and authors of the Indus civilization, the various areas of the site, architecture and masonry, plain and painted pottery, figurines, and model animals.Volume 2 describes the faience and store vessles, seals, impressions, copper tablets, sign list of the early Indus script.
