What is Precision Determination of Antiferromagnetic Form Factors about?

The form factors of magnetic ions are much more di$cult to measure in antiferromagnetic structures than in ferromagnetic ones since the cross-section of the former is not usually polarisation dependent. For antiferromagnets such as Cr O in which the magnetic and nuclear scattering are superimposed and in phase quadrature the separation of the nuclear and magnetic parts is particularly di$cult. In such structures spherical polarimetry provides a new method of measuring the ratio between the magnetic and nuclear structure factors ( ); since the polarisation direction of neutrons scattered by such mixed re#ections is rotated by an angle proportional to sin\ /(1# ). The accuracy of the measurement depends on the precision with which components of the polarisation can be measured and on the degree of imbalance in the 1803 domains. We have applied this method to measure the Cr> form-factor in Cr O crystals. These were cooled through the NeH el temperature in parallel electric and magnetic "elds, to unbalance the domain populations. The results from two crystals in several di!erent domain states show a high degree of consistency, suggesting that a precision in of better than 0.005 is obta
