In the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, there is a life-size marble portrait head of an elderly man (pls. 1-3, 5:1) that has not previously been recorded in archaeological literature. It deserves special attention, for it is not only antique and well preserved but is of extremely high quality and considerable historic interest. \({ }^{1}\) The portrait is labeled Republican, an ascription with merit, given its general appearance and assumed date. But closer examination shows that the work is not typical of Republican portraiture, at least that from Rome or Italy. It seems, instead, to be from the eastern Mediterranean and belongs to a fascinating group of psychological and physiognomic 1 This portrait was only recently acquired for the collection; in a small upstairs room with various heads it has been largely overlooked. The piece was bought in August 1953 by J. Paul Getty at Spink's, London. They inform me that their records of its history of provenance are, unfortunately, lost.
