The Romanian cyanide spill of 2000 was one of the worst environmental disasters in Eastern Europe. On January 30th, a broken dam at a gold mine in Baia Mare, Romania released over 100,000 cubic meters of waste containing cyanide and heavy metals into the Somes River.
