What is On the Chronology of the Buddhist Tantras about?
Abstract This chapter provides a discussion and overview of the approximate dates of the composition of Buddhist tantras in early medieval South Asia. It covers as many important tantras as possible to provide a comprehensive rundown of the history of Buddhist tantras. Many Buddhist tantras are evolving texts; they were gradually compiled, enlarged, and organized by different authors over decades or in some cases even centuries. It also often happens that different groups of authors separately developed different versions of a tantra. It is also one of the roles of the chronological study, as far as possible, to reveal the complicated processes of growth and reproduction of the tantras.
