What is Characterization of Steamed Wood Lignin from Beech Wood about?
In order to elucidate chemical properties of steamed wood lignin (STWL)» beech wood (Fagus crenata) was treated at 183-230°C with saturated steam for various periods of time. The amount of lignin extractable with 90% dioxane increased remarkably äs the steaming temperature was elevated and the time extended, so that more than 70% of lignin became soluble from the wood steamed at 230°C for 2 min. The lignins from woods treated under various steaming conditions were investigated by elementary and functional analyses, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), infrared spectroscopy, I3 C-NMR and nitrobenzene oxidation. For comparison, beech milled wood lignin (MWL) was also investigated in the same manner. Lignin was broken down by extensive cleavage of ß-aryl ether linkage during the steaming process, resulting to STWL of high phenolic hydroxyl content. At the same time, the aliphatic hydroxyl group content decreased. The chemical properties of STWL were found to depend on the steaming temperature. Namely, lignin from wood steamed at relatively low temperature (183-215 °C) was rieh in syringyl units and only slightly modified. By treatment at higher temperature (230°C) STWL was most likely
