The RBMK is a graphite-moderated, water-cooled nuclear reactor designed and built in the Soviet Union. It uses enriched uranium as solid fuel and has a positive void coefficient, which means that the removal of water from the core causes power to increase. The first RBMK reactor was built in 1954. One of the four RBMK reactors at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded in 1986, causing the worst civil nuclear disaster. Improvements were later made to the design of remaining RBMK reactors.
