Certain reactions, such as the hydrogen-oxygen and phosphorusoxygen reactions, have the remarkable feature that as the pressure is varied their rates may change sharply from a low to a very high value. The first indication of this appears to have been obtained by Chariton and Walta, and was later confirmed by Semenoff, Hinsheiwood and their collaborators. The paper that is reproduced below is the first one in which the explosion limits were explained on the basis of a reaction mechanism.
