Giganotosaurus was a large carnivorous theropod dinosaur that lived in Argentina between 99.6 to 97 million years ago. It was one of the largest known terrestrial carnivores, with the holotype specimen indicating a length of 12 to 13 meters and a weight of 4.2 to 13.8 tons. Giganotosaurus had a low skull with a ridge in front of its eye, serrated teeth, and a flattened front of the lower jaw. It is believed to have been the apex predator of its ecosystem, preying on juvenile sauropod dinosaurs.
