Mr. Chips died in November 1933 at the age of 85 while sleeping. When Mrs. Wickett returned from visiting relatives, she found Mr. Chips unconscious. Others were called and stood around him as he awoke. The headmaster commented that Mr. Chips never had children, to which Mr. Chips replied that his students were his sons. He then named a few before closing his eyes for the last time. The school learned of his passing the next morning at breakfast.
