Psilocybin, the active hallucinogenic compound, was identified for the first time in the sporophores (fruiting bodies) of Psilocybe semilanceata, which commonly grows in the UK. Chemical analysis showed the presence of psilocybin at approximately 0.15% of the dry weight of the sporophores. Ingestion of more than 3 grams of dried P. semilanceata sporophores could produce hallucinogenic effects based on known doses of pure psilocybin.
