The kidneys perform several important functions including regulating blood volume, pressure, pH and electrolyte levels. The kidneys filter blood to produce urine through nephrons, which contain a glomerulus and renal tubule. The glomerulus filters blood to form an initial filtrate. Most of this filtrate is reabsorbed by the renal tubule, while waste products are left to be excreted in urine. Precise regulation of filtration, reabsorption and secretion allow the kidneys to maintain homeostasis.
