The Japanese seized Attu Island in 1942 as part of an effort to control the Aleutians and prevent US attacks from the north. In May 1943, US and Canadian forces launched an operation to retake the island. The defending Japanese forces were well-prepared and inflicted heavy initial losses on the Allied troops. After nearly three weeks of battle, the Japanese commander ordered a banzai charge that ended organized resistance.
