Lucille Clifton was an acclaimed African American poet who published her first poetry collection in 1969. She taught writing and poetry at several prestigious universities. Clifton traced her ancestry to the Kingdom of Dahomey in West Africa (now Benin). She died in 2011 at age 73, having established herself as an important voice in American poetry.
