Experimental results are presented in the range 10 "6 torr to 10 -4 torr for the operation of a demountable gauge head as a space charge ion focusing gauge. The effects of varying the drift length are shown. A new mode of operation is proposed in which the gauge head is operated under dc conditions by using an ion collector. Experimental results within the fimited pressure range 2 x 10 .6 torr to 9 × 10 .6 torr are given. Under the new operating conditions the high gain associated with space charge gauges is employed to indicate pressures without the use of an external dc amplifier or switching circuit.
