King Louis XIV of France was an absolute monarch during the 17th and 18th centuries who consolidated power under himself. He built the magnificent Palace of Versailles as a symbol of his absolute rule and to keep the nobility dependent on him. Louis personally controlled the government for most of his 54 year reign and excluded other nobles from decision making. He spent vast amounts on wars, the palace, and a large standing army to assert French power, but this burdened the people with extremely high taxes
