What is Behula: The Legendary Folk Heroine about?

Behula was a legendary folk heroine married to Lakhindar. On their wedding night, the snake goddess Manasa sent a snake to kill Lakhindar in an iron chamber built by his father. Behula refused to accept his death, placing his body on a raft and journeying to the abode of the gods to plead for his life. Moved by her love, Manasa restored Lakhindar and his brothers to life. Behula returned home successfully with her husband and his brothers, and her father-in-law finally bowed to Manasa.
