Computing Orthogonal Polynomials by Frank G. Landram; Bahram Alidaee is a Engineering article available to read on EtoBox.
What is Computing Orthogonal Polynomials about?
Scope and Purpose---This article describes a single procedure for the general case of orthogonalizing polynomials in regression models and constructing orthogonal contrasts in the analysis of variance. This latter capability is not found in commercial statistical software. Orthogonalization in regression analysis and the analysis of variance exemplifies the linear-curvilinear relationships which exist in a given set of data. Since data analysis is used frequently in scientific studies, this procedure should appeal to a widely diverse audience. Abstract--A simple transformation for achieving orthogonal polynomials of any order is described in this article. This transformation, called the residual procedure, is easy to understand, easy to implement in existing programs, and applicable for polynomial regression models whose data are unequally spaced. This same procedure is used in obtaining coefficients for orthogonal contrasts in the analysis of variance. The simplicity of this procedure also makes it easily adaptable to spread-sheet and data base applications.
