Swedish parents view pregnancy and early infancy as a time of great vulnerability despite the fact that Sweden has a very tow infant mortality rate. ## Parent hood and Infancy in Sweden Barbara Weltes-Nystrom This chapter explores the experience of parenthood and infant care in Sweden, particularly the features that distinguish it from parental experience elsewhere. The Swedish case is examined as an urban-industrial society with low fertility and infant mortality rates as well as extensive health and welfare services in support of reproduction. Sweden is at the low end on the global continuum of reproductive rates, with only six infant deaths per 1,000 live births and a total fertility rate of 1.6 births per woman, and it has had very low fertility and infant mortality rates for more than fifty years. Sweden's first-time mothers are among the world's oldest, averaging 26.4 years of age, since most Swedish women begin their occupational careers before their reproductive lives. The majority (65 percent) of mothers with young children are employed at least half-time (SCB, 1981). The government provides benefits to encourage women to bear more children, including a parental insurance
