What is Flow Versus Batch Detection of Radioactivity in Column Liquid Chromatography about?

In ,'m,'dytical applications, separation methods have to be combined with physical measurements. One ofthe most advanced combin,'ttions is column chromatography followed by me',lsurement of a suitable physical quantity of the column effluent in a flow-through mode. Many flow-through detectors have been developed for chromatographic applications. Coupling of the detector to the separation system requires a mutual adaptation of the dynamic beh,'wiour of both modules in order to minimize peak-broadening effects. Radiometric flow-througla detectors are a special chtss because of the statistical nature of the radioactive decay. The fluctuations in the number o1" counts measured in a given time are described by a Poisson distribution function, the relative stand,'wd deviation of which is inversely proportional to the square root of the ntHrlber of counts and thus to the counting time. The precision of measurement of other physical quantities such as light absorption, electrical ,'rod therm,'d conductivity, or refractive index appears to incre,'lse much less with time th:m the precision of the measurement of radioactivity. In this paper, the special nature of radiometric flow detectors is
