More than 9 million Canadians have diabetes or prediabetes. There are three main types of diabetes: type 1 where the pancreas cannot produce insulin; type 2 where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body does not use it effectively; and gestational diabetes during pregnancy. If left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, and sexual function. Risk factors include age, family history, ethnicity, weight, and prior gestational diabetes.
