What is Bioreactor Landfills: Sustainable Solution for Disposal of Municipal Solid Waste about?
Challenges in the management of municipal solid waste (MSW) management arise mainly because of unprecedented increase in population, urbanization and industrialization. Disposal of MSW in conventional dry tomb type landfills partakes immense environmental challenges and health hazards. Dry tomb landfill takes very long time for MSW stabilization and produces landfill gas (LFG) with reduced rate. Therefore, need of sustainable solutions for MSW disposal is obvious. Bioreactor landfills facilitate early stabilization of MSW in comparatively shorter period with high rate of LFG generation with the provision of accelerated moisture recirculation. Moreover, the organic strength of leachate decreases over the period of landfilling in bioreactor landfills. This chapter discusses various environmental aspects of bioreactor landfills such as; general aspects, key design recommendations, specific comparisons over conventional landfills and use of LFG from bioreactor landfills for energy generation. Bioreactor landfills could be a sustainable solution for MSW treatment and disposal for developing nations by virtue of it accelerating the biodegradation and extensive LFG generation.
