What is Structure and properties of polyvinylchloride. II. Dynamic‐mechanical properties of rigid PVC about?
## Abstract A recording torsion pendulum built for frequencies of 0.02 to 11 c/sec and temperatures of −196 to 250°C was used for rigid PVC (I) and low‐temperature polymerized PVC (II). The polymers showed a primary transition region at 78°C for I and 84°C for II related to the glass transition and a secondary transition region at about −55°C for I and II. Extensive measurements, where both frequency and temperature were varied, were made for I. The resulting master curve for the complex modulus G′′ showed two maxima, one primary at 10^−8.5^ c/sec due to segment motion of the polymer chains, and one secondary maximum at 10^5^ c/sec interpreted as due to vibrational motion of groups along the chains. From diagrams of the shift factor __vs.__ 1/T, apparent activation energies of 169 and 15.7 kcal/mole monomer units were calculated for segment motion ( 32°C), respectively.
