This article discusses the ambivalences and errors which constitute impediments to serious interdisciplinary research. Our starting point is an actual debate between the followers of the so-called ethno-grammar and the adherents of universal grammar of the Chomskyan type -controversial especially with regards to the existence of recursive syntax as a defining feature of human language. To understand this discussion it is important to introduce a series of theoretical concepts that clarify the different levels of language and linguistic activities, thereby determining the status of linguistic descriptions and theories. Crucial here is the differentiation between language theory (Sprachtheorie), theory of linguistics (Theorie der Sprachwissenschaft, Metalinguistik), the domain of linguistics (Sprachwissenschaft) and the status of different linguistic theories (linguistische Theorieausprägungen) that operate in the disciplinary matrix of linguistics. From an epistemological and scientific perspective, the recognition of these conceptual differences is a presupposition of valid interdisciplinarity.
