Orbital overlap between two atoms is necessary for bond formation and the sharing of electrons. When atomic orbitals come close together, electron density increases between the two nuclei, lowering repulsion and allowing the atoms to form a bond. The electron pair in a bond between two identical atoms is shared equally and lies halfway between the nuclei, while in a bond between different atoms the pair is closer to the more electronegative atom and the sharing is unequal.
