Analysing The Mechanical Behavior of a Non-Rotating Wire Rope by R. Ashkenazy,; D. Elata,; M.P. Weiss, is a Engineering article available to read on EtoBox.

What is Analysing The Mechanical Behavior of a Non-Rotating Wire Rope about?

The mechanical response of a non-rotating wire rope is analyzed using a new modeling approach. Unlike previous models that approximated the response of wound strands by using the response of a straight strand, the new modeling approach fully considers the double-helix configuration of individual wires within the wound strand. An appropriate kinematics is assumed on the individual double helix wire and accordingly the mechanical response under unlubricated condition is simulated. The postulated kinematics is theoretically validated at the rope level and the predicted rope response is in agreement with new experimental data. The new model makes it possible to analyze the effect of geometrical features and to establish optimal mechanical properties for non-rotating and balanced cables.
