Nobel Laureate White was one of Australia's greatest writers, but he had no use for unfinished work or notes lying about for earnest scholars to analyze after his death. He preferred to let his published work, which was considerable, do all his talking for him. Hubber (curator, Geelong Art Gallery) and Smith (Australian writing, U. of Sydney) take on the mammoth task of listing all of White's published works, including fiction, poetry, and drama in all their editions, as well as significant critical responses. They include White's works that have been translated (into 31 languages), short stories, musical adaptations, miscellaneous writings, and, despite White's intentions, a few stray manuscripts.
