The Parnall companies entered aviation when the Admiralty asked Parnall & Sons Ltd to manufacture and recondition RNAS aeroplanes. This work involved Avro, Fairey, Short and Sopwith types and led to Parnall designing and building its own naval aircraft and to a long association between Parnall, the Admiralty, Air Ministry and British aviation industry.The author traces in great detail the history and development of the Parnall concerns from early in the twentieth century and their involvement in aircraft work up to the mid-1960s.Most Parnall aeroplanes have long been forgotten but Kenneth Wixey brings to life a whole range of interesting types including the one-off Scout or Zepp-Chaser, the Panther naval two-seater with folding fuselage, the Puffin amphibious fighter, Plover carrier-borne fighter, Possum triplane mailplane, Pixie light aeroplane, the submarine-borne Peto, the naval reconnaissance Pike, the Pipit shipboard fighter and many others.
