What is Secrets of the Deep about?

"Three billion years ago life was born somewhere in the drifting froth of the sea," writes Stephen Spotte in Secrets of the Deep. From the remote era to the present, the author explores the innermost secrets of marine creatures in lively sketches, each on a single theme. In the first half of the book, the survival techniques of sea creatures are discussed: What are the advantages to a fish of being silver? Why can some animals predict changes in tidal rhythms with unerring accuracy? How can fishes communicate by chemistry alone? The second half of the book is concerned with the complex jumble of animals and plants that scientists recognize as aquatic communities. Many of these communities live in harmony with human beings, yet remain invisible. The tidal wrack at a public bathing beach, for example, is more than a random scattering of weeds and shells left by the falling tide. It is, in fact, a highly structured city of animals and plants.
