For many years the government documents community has avoided using traditional cataloging rules for government documents. When the American Library Association (ALA) announced in 1975 a revision of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, the Government Documents Round Table (GODORT) seized the opportunity to participate in the revision, hoping to influence the rule-writing committee to produce rules that would make it easier for the searcher to find government information in traditional catalogs and would encourage libraries to include government documents in traditional catalogs. GODORT submitted the following statement to the ALA Resources and Technical Services Division (RTSD) and the Joint Steering Committee of AACR2 in January of 1975.
