Bacteriophages, or phages, are viruses that infect and replicate within bacterial cells. They have a nucleic acid core surrounded by a protein capsid. Phages have a head and tail structure, with the head containing DNA and the tail used to attach to bacteria. Phages can undergo lytic or lysogenic replication cycles. In the lytic cycle, the phage kills the bacterial cell to release new virus particles. In the lysogenic cycle, the phage genome integrates into the bacterial chromosome without killing the cell.
