Lord and Lady Greystoke are the only survivors of a shipwreck on the West coast of Africa. Lady Greystoke gives birth to a boy named John, but later dies, leaving Lord Greystoke to care for the baby alone. Lord Greystoke is then killed by an ape, leaving the baby alone, until a female ape finds him and raises him as her own. The baby, later known as Tarzan, grows up among the apes with human intelligence and becomes the leader of the apes.
