Inspector McKee of Manhattan Homicide, on a holiday, is driving from Denver to Albuquerque when overtaken by a violent spring storm. His car disabled, he makes for refuge in an isolated old hacienda. In the courtyard he finds a Mexican lying with his head bashed in. Without so much as a by-your-leave, he drags the dying man in and gets him to bed, commandeering the help of such people as he finds. In the ranch house appear, one by one, a strangely assorted group: its brassy lady tenant; a mousey little woman who pretends to be a stranger here; a New York broker with his fiancée and her sister; and a corset salesman from Chicago.
