交戰雙方和約簽訂,戰爭才算結束。中華民國對日和約,遲至1952年日降後六年又八個月才在臺北簽字,原因涉及戰後中國變局。1945年日本敗降,1949年12月,中國共產黨勢力席捲大陸,中華民國政府退守臺灣,這時蘇聯在東亞勢力擴張,國際局勢巨變,戰勝的中、美、英、蘇、法五強,對東亞新秩序的建立,有複雜考慮,同盟52國在三藩市召開對日和會,直到1951年9月8日,才有蘇、波、捷之外的49國參與簽訂的金山和約。當時中華民國未獲邀參加,次年(1952)4月28日在臺北正式簽訂中華民國對日和約,結束了中華民國與日本的戰爭狀態。由於戰後美國在東亞扮演舉足輕重的角色,因此也可看到中、美、日三方外交穿梭的足跡。本書主要有一、中國對金山和約立場表示(1950-1952)與金山和約的簽訂;二、中日雙邊和約前的籌議,包括美方意向、實施範圍、中日雙邊交涉及名稱問題的討論。
