Giovanni da Verrazano was born in 1485 in Tuscany, France into a noble family. He received an excellent education and later joined the French maritime service. In 1523, King Francis I commissioned Verrazano to lead an expedition to find the Northwest Passage to Asia, giving him two ships. In 1524, Verrazano explored the eastern coast of North America, naming places like New York Bay and Narragansett Bay. He returned to France and made two more voyages, but was killed in 1528 by cannibals during an expeditio
