Rizal was brought to Fort Santiago pending trial for his alleged crimes. Over several days in November and December 1896, the Spanish authorities gathered evidence against Rizal and had him stand trial before a military court. On December 30, 1896, Rizal was found guilty and sentenced to death by firing squad at Bagumbayan Field. That morning, Rizal was executed by a firing squad at 7:03AM, uttering his last words "Consummatum Est". His family was not allowed to retrieve his body, which was secretly buried
