Cyanosis can be either peripheral or central in origin. Peripheral cyanosis is caused by cold, obstruction, left ventricular failure and shock, or decreased cardiac output and presents with cold palms. Central cyanosis can be due to polycythemia, altitude, lung disease, methemoglobinemia, sulfhemoglobinemia, or a shunt.
