章学诚著作《文史通义》是清乾嘉时代一部开风气的巨著。作者想挽救当时的学风。他在《上辛楣宫詹钱大昕》的信里说:“世俗风尚,必有所偏,达人显贵之所主持,聪明才俊之所奔赴,其中流弊必不在小。载笔之士不思救挽,无为贵著述矣。苟欲有所救挽,则必逆于时越。”他看到当时学风的流弊,想加以挽救。叶瑛校注本,不仅校出其漏脱和错字,并作了详细扎实的注释,纠正了原著中的疏漏处。还从原著者章学诚的全集中征引了一些可供参考的材料。
