Mycobacteria are acid-fast bacilli that can cause tuberculosis in humans. They are slender rods that form mould-like colonies in liquid culture. The most important mycobacteria that infect humans are M. tuberculosis, which causes tuberculosis, and non-tuberculous mycobacteria. M. tuberculosis is transmitted via aerosols from infected individuals and penetrates the lungs where it is ingested by macrophages.
