The macroscopic morphology of the sacroiliac joint has been studied (e.g. ridges and grooves). although the complexity and degree of individual variation of these irregularities have inhibited the development of a baseline for normal morphology . Thus. limited conclusions can be drawn distinguishing between pathological and adapational changes correlated with age and sex. This is a preliminary study designed to test whether a select group of measurements can adequately describe joirt macro/micro morphology and provide a baseline by which further analytical comparison of the micro-irregUlarities « 2 mm) of the joint surface can be investigated. A single sacroiliac joint was serially sectioned (1.3 mm thickness). and 20 sections were selected to sample the total joint micro/macro morphology. The bone-cartilage interface. joint space and anterior extreme of the joint were digitized.
