J.K. is a 34-year-old man with a 16-year history of schizophrenia who was admitted on a 5150 hold after becoming aggressive and yelling about killing himself. He had been noncompliant with his medication regimen. On examination, he displayed slowed speech and motor function, depressed mood, loose thought processes, and auditory hallucinations telling him to kill himself. His symptoms were consistent with prior decompensations from medication noncompliance.
