Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 900 km east of Madagascar, with a population of around 1.3 million people. It was uninhabited until the 17th century when it was colonized by the Dutch, French and British. Today Mauritius is a parliamentary republic and member of several international organizations, with a predominantly Hindu population and a diverse ethnic makeup including Indian, African, European and Chinese people.
