## Abstract This chapter asserts that reflection on cross-cultural mission encounters guided the unfolding understanding of Christianity as a worldwide, multicultural religion. After providing historical background to the theme, the chapter analyzes how during the mid to late twentieth century, mission scholars focused on the dynamic intersection of local contexts with the universalizing logic of the Christian Gospel. Mission studies as a formal academic discipline, therefore, played a major role in the emergence of world Christianity as an academic discourse. The chapter argues that contemporary postcolonial perspectives in mission studies continue to shape the field.
