Microsoft has updated its licensing policies for Windows Server as of October 1, 2022, allowing customers to license Windows Server by virtual machine. There are two editions of Windows Server 2022, Standard and Datacenter, both licensed under a Per Core and CAL model, with options for perpetual or subscription licenses. New rules also facilitate licensing through Cloud Solution Provider-Hoster partners and include the Azure Hybrid Benefit for using existing licenses in Azure environments.
