Rosin can undergo both condensation and addition reactions. Its carboxyl group can be esterified with alcohols to produce non-resinous, resinous non-convertible, and resinous convertible products. It can also be neutralized with lime or zinc oxide to produce limed rosin and zinc resinate. Rosin derivatives like lead, cobalt, and manganese resinates are used as driers for oil and varnish.
