What is AIAA Scitech 2020 Forum - Prediction of trailing edge separation on the NASA Juncture Flow using wall-modeled LES about?
This is an invited paper for the SciTech 2020 special session: NASA Juncture Flow. We report on the performance of wall-modeled large-eddy simulation (WMLES) for predicting the mean flow features and the trailing edge separation on the NASA Juncture Flow. The simulations are performed using charLES (Cascade Technologies, Inc.) with an equilibrium wall model and voronoi grid technology. The predictions are compared with the experimental results from NASA. Two grids are considered; a reference grid with a near-wall resolution of 0.4 mm, and a coarser grid with a near-wall resolution of 1 mm. For the reference grid, our results show that WMLES is capable of predicting the mean velocity profiles to within 5% accuracy. The largest errors are encountered at the wing trailing edge in the vicinity of the fuselage. The turbulence intensities are systematically underestimated by 10-20%, as expected for the typical grid resolutions of WMLES for external aerodynamics. At the angle of attack of 5 • , the trailing edge separation bubble is recovered to within ∼10% error.
