This document describes how an intruder alarm or object counter can be designed using a laser light source, light dependent resistor (LDR), and monostable multivibrator integrated circuit. The circuit triggers when the laser light falling on the LDR is interrupted, such as when an intruder passes between the laser and LDR. For an intruder alarm, a buzzer would sound when the laser is interrupted. For an object counter, pulses are sent to a digital counter each time an object interrupts the laser.
