There are five OBD-II communication protocols: SAE J1850 PWM, SAE J1850 VPW, ISO 9141-2, ISO 14230 KWP2000, and ISO 15765 CAN. They operate at speeds between 10.4-1000 kbps using different pin configurations and signaling methods like PWM, VPW, and CAN. ISO 15765 CAN has been mandated for all US vehicles since 2008 and is a two-wire protocol that can operate up to 1Mbps.
