1) The Assassin movement was started by Hassan-i Sabbah in the late 11th century from his fortress of Alamut in northern Persia. 2) He used a secret organization of assassins, known as fidai, to carry out targeted killings of enemies and spread terror through Persia and the Crusader states. 3) The Assassins reached the peak of their power in the 12th century, controlling many fortresses across Persia and Syria, before their strongholds were destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century.
