This document describes a novel method for synthesizing NieNiO/C nanocomposites using molten carbonate electrolysis. Nickel is used as the sacrificial anode to generate Ni ions that deposit on the cathode and oxidize to form embedded NieNiO nanoparticles within an in-situ formed carbon matrix. The resulting material exhibits superior lithium storage performance including high capacity, long cycling stability, and rate capability for lithium-ion batteries.
